The Poet Bihari Offers Homage to Radha and Krishna

Attributed to Nainsukh of Guler, the master Pahari painter, this c. 1760–65 miniature is the opening page of a manuscript of Bihari's Satasai. Radha and Krishna sit enthroned as a white robed man bows before them, his satchel holding either a poet's tools or a painter's brushes. He is Bihari honouring his divine inspiration, but also Nainsukh himself, making the figure at once devotee and artist, long dead poet and living painter. Painted in opaque watercolour, gold, and silver on paper.
