Pradosh Das Gupta

1912-1991

Pradosh Das Gupta (1912–1991) was a prominent Indian modernist sculptor. He was a founding member and the first secretary of the Calcutta Group (1943), one of India's earliest modern art collectives that pushed Indian art toward contemporary international idioms while engaging with local themes.

Trained in India and later in London (Royal Academy) and Paris, he brought a modernist sensibility to Indian sculpture, working in bronze and other media with smooth, rounded, often sensuous forms. He served as Director of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi. He also wrote on art and sculpture. His work is considered significant in the development of modern Indian sculpture in the mid-20th century.
