Abanindranath Tagore

Abanindranath Tagore (1871–1951) was a pioneering Indian painter and the principal founder of the Bengal School of Art. Reacting against Western academic styles, he revived indigenous traditions and drew on Mughal miniature and wash techniques to create a distinctly Indian modern art. His most famous work, Bharat Mata (1905), became an enduring nationalist image and secured his place as a key figure in the cultural awakening of modern India.
